Limekiln, a renewable energy solution

Green Energy background in Scotland

In line with advice from the Committee on Climate Charge (CCC), in preparing the Climate Change Act 2019, the Scottish Government has set a target date of 2045 for reaching net-zero emissions. The Climat Change Act 2019 means that Scotland has the most stringent statutory targets in the world. The CCC’s advice is that Scotland can nom achieve such a target, provided that action is taken to further develop renewable energy assets. However, these targets cannot be met without further renewable energy development, including onshore wind. Ways to ensure the landscape can accommodate this include carefully chosen sites and sensitively designed developments.

Onshore Wind Policy Statement in Scotland

Scotland’s onshore wind energy capacity will more than double by 2030 under plans to help cut harmful emissions and support the energy sector’s net-zero transformation. The Scottish Government has recently published its finalized Onshore Wind Policy Statement and confirms its ambitions for 20 Gigawatts (GW) of onshore wind power to be installed by 2030. Boralex received confirmation of the consent granted by Scottish Ministers to construct and operate the onshore wind farm in 2022. Limekiln Wind Farm will produce green energy to meet the annual demand of around 100,000 average UK households per year of operation, expected to be 40 years.

Green power purchase agreement

Having successfully achieved a government-backed Contract for Difference (CfD) on Allocation Round 5 in September 2023, Boralex has, in 2024, secured a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Statkraft, one of the leading PPA providers in the UK, for a 3-year contract covering the period between commissioning of the wind farm and the start of the CfD in April 2028.
